Not that you are likely to need to go off site once you are there, except maybe on Friday afternoon/evening, however there follows some suggestions just in case. I'll try and edit the first post to keep it up to date and keep the replies clear from unrelated comments so, apologies if I delete yours. Thanks to all contributors for their suggestions which I have pulled from other threads.
From Des 'The Plough' in Finstock, see its websites for details. you can walk over the fields to them about 10-15 mins from campsite. Fiveways Indian takeaway in Charlbury is superb. 'Bell' and 'Bull' in Charlbury - I suggest you book ahead. Anyone who simply needs liquid refreshment should visit the Rose and Crown in Charlbury - they do not do food, but are a fabulous pub and superb real ale and cider. Details and map under 'visitors guide' at http://www.charlbury.info/cgi-bin/dstatic.cgi?file=towninfo.html might help. Nivens Mum There is a Fab fish and chip shop, Jose's on the Hailey Road into Witney, about 3 mile drive but worth it, come out of the campsite and turn right, pass through Hailey..pass BP garage on your left, Josies f&c shop on your right next to bookmakers...mmmmmm Andyp The pub in Hailey is OK for a drink and snack, can't remember its name, it is on the main road next to the school. Unless like many it has closed down edit from original post from agsconnolly Hi all, As a lifelong resident of Finstock I feel I may be able to offer some guidance here. The Crown (not recommended): used to be a decent boozers pub but .....You'll be lucky if they've actually got any beer in if you drop in for a pint. I understand the food goes down well with some....... I don't mind popping in there on occasion but only for who I might bump into rather than for the pub itself. The Plough is a short walk down the road from the Crown at the bottom of the hill. Award-winning beer/cider and top food (Good Food Guide, Good Beer Guide, CAMRA etc.). Can get very busy but there's a good-sized garden too. The Royal Oak (Ramsden) - another award-winning venue in the neighbouring village to Finstock. Easiest way to get there is head towards Hailey and turn left at the bottom of the big dip, where the right turn is the garden centre. Keep going and the pub is in the centre of the village. There used to be two pubs in the other closest village, Leafield, but both have now closed. The pub in Hailey is the Lamb & Flag - a small but reasonable place. I agree with the Charlbury recommendations given previously. And yes, Jose's Fish Bar is the best chip shop around - they seem to take a lot more pride in their food than Smarts, the local chain. Cheers Ags
